Fr. Egidius Cherayath was appointed at
Varantharappilly as the assistant rector of aspirants when he was a
young priest. There, he started a life committed to formation. From
there, he went to Elthuruth as the rector of aspirants. He cared for
the overall development of the aspirants, teaching music and
musical instruments, taking tuition and also laying the foundation
for spiritual and religious life in them. He served as section master in
Dharmaram College, superior of Trichur Provincial House, and also
as the rector of the minor seminary in Saibaba Colony, Coimbatore.
He was eager to take up pastoral work in nearby parishes. Always
moving around in his Carmelite brown cassock, Fr Egidius lived as a
strict religious life being simple and prayerful. He spent hours
together for hearing confession in formation houses, even when he
was old and sick. His was an edifying presence for the aspirants and
novices. In 2017, he was called by the Lord to his eternal life, and he
was buried at Palakkad.
